20/20 ist ein Begriff aus der Optik, der für perfekte Sicht steht. Als wir im Jahr 2020 re:visions gründeten, haben wir festgestellt, dass politisches Handeln, soziales Miteinander und diskursive Teilhabe stärker als zuvor durch Unsichtbares geprägt sind–denken wir zum Beispiel an Viren und Biopolitik, Algorithmen und Netzwerke oder Repräsentation in Kunst und Gesellschaft. Mit re:visions schärfen wir daher den Blick auf aktuelle Themen und relevante Forschungsfelder und ermöglichen einen engagierten Dialog zwischen Studierenden, jungen Wissenschaftler:innen und Kunstschaffenden.
Wir verstehen re:visions als eine Plattform für vielfältige Stimmen und neue Perspektiven aus der Kunstgeschichte und benachbarte Disziplinen; somit füllen wir eine Lücke im kulturellen und akademischen Betrieb, in dem es für einen solchen Austausch bisweilen zu wenig Raum gibt.

Eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Differenzmarkern wie race, class, gender und Sexualität ist dabei für uns kein theoretischer Ansatz unter vielen, sondern prägt unser Denken und Schreiben durchgehend.

re:visions is an open access online journal for art and visual culture of the 20th and 21st centuries. We publish essays, articles, reviews, interviews, and profiles that have undergone two rounds of internal review as well as commissioned texts. Founded by students at the Art Historical Institute of the Free University of Berlin, we release one issue per year with contributions in both English and German.

Mission Statement

20/20, a measurement of visual acuity in optometry, denotes perfect vision. When we started re:visions in 2020, we saw how political agency, social life, and discursive participation were being shaped by invisibility arguably more than ever—we need think only of viruses and biopolitics, algorithms and networks, or representation in art and society. Working within this landscape, re:visions focuses our gaze more sharply upon current issues and relevant fields of research by facilitating dialogue between students, young scholars, and artists.

We regard re:visions as a platform for diverse voices and new perspectives from and on art history and adjacent disciplines. As such, we fill a gap in the cultural and academic spheres, neither of which consistently provides the space required for exchanges of this kind. We believe that critical engagement with markers of difference including race, class, gender, and sexuality does not represent one theoretical framework among many but rather shapes our thinking and writing throughout.
